The city of Decatur in Morgan County was founded in 1820 and named after U. S. naval officer Commodore Stephen Decatur. Settlers were attracted to this city because of its location in the Tennessee River Valley which leads to easy river access to other cities. Decatur is the core city of the Decatur Metropolitan Area, and the second largest (core) city in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. Decatur sits on the southern bank of the Tennessee River. It has a current population of 54,528.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 155.1 km² (59.9 mi²). 138.3 km² (53.4 mi²) of it is land and 16.8 km² (6.5 mi²) of it (10.83%) is water.
