Auburn a city in Lee County covers a total area of 47.2 sq. miles. Estimated population of Auburn is 46,923 according to 2003 census. Auburn is bordered by the city of Opelika to the northeast and by Chambers County to the north.Auburn boasts of beautiful landscape as it is situated at the juncture of the piedmont plateau and the coastal plain. Auburn also includes areas like the last foothill of the Appalachian Mountains which lies in Chewacla Park in southern Auburn.The southern part of Auburn includes plains and savannahs while there is more of rugged topography in north Auburn. Auburn is drained by three main creek systems: in the south, by the Chewacla/Opintlocco Creek system; in the north, by the Saugahatchee Creek system; and in the extreme northern reaches of Auburn by Sandy Creek. Auburn enjoys mild winters while summers are hot and muggy. It enjoys an average annual rainfall of 52.6 inches (1340 mm). It is also subjected to tropical storms and hurricanes, the most important of them were hurricanes Opal in 1995 and Ivan in 2004.
